Django unchained is a film with a narrative and binary opposition approach. The narrative approach communicates to the viewer signifiers, patterns/relationships, finding the key/central themes and symbolic significance, as well as the ways in which the audience engage with the storyline. A signifier such as the chain pertains to the physical image of the slave ( Django ) as bound to imprisoned with no freedom. The denotation of Django sitting on his horse carrying a gun, primarily suggest him being a hero
Tarantino’s uses violence in this film in which the good are rewarded and the evil are punished. The use of fiction intensifies the emotions of the audience were pity and fear can be felt. Violence becomes a language characteristic and purposeful that runs throughout the film
On he other hand the connotation of Django dressed in cowboy clothes in a western environment brings in an aura as it implicates the notion of white man as proper cowboy opposed to a black man moreover as the protagonist. Therefore it creates the idea of postmodern as a critique to modernism. The use of colour and texture in the the posters play an important role in examining the process, analyse the pairs of binary oppositions out of which the deep theme and connotation of the movie is produced and interpreted.
However the signifier takes a different twist after he was released, trained and became a hero which changes the dynamics of the whole film. or text within the sign and the signified explains the idea or concept behind the sign on elements such as narrative structure, exposition, narrative voice and editing is important when using textual analysis, setting, colour, tone, costume.
It seeks to uncover the structures that underlie all human’s cultural behaviours. A protagonist is one who is expected to be an expect in what he endeavours, however with Django his binary denotation as a hero and top of the situation is hindered by the his companion Dr Schultz, who is depicted as his white saviour. Django is foreseen as waiting for instruction from his white colleague to any actions and moreover he acquired the skills to fight. The notion of being black denotes the lower class and suffering and being white would suggest liberty, freedom and respect.
On the other hand another scene of Samuel L Jackson depicts a totally different atmosphere of a black slave who is not chained and does show any signs of struggle, but rather can be related to being a puppet. He seems to be in control of situations and does only take instruction from his superior but executes his own authority, taking matters in his own hands. It then brings a new revelation of another black slave who can inflicts brutality as as a way to control his surroundings.
To conclude, Django Unchained is a well written film which deals with an array of issues throughout. The film is evidently postmodern in nature with a narrative approach with binary opposition system.
